While the word 'legend' is over-used in many references, there are some rugby players who have attained that status as a result of their impact on the field and sheer versatality and overall success. For many, greatness has been attained during the biggest tournament of them all, the Rugby World Cup, held every four years. For others, it has been their achievements down the years and influenced on their respective country's fortunes. Some, like Jonah Lomu, became legends for the manner in which they played the game and broke down barriers. Players like George Gregan and Jonny Wilkinson became overnight superstars on the basis of pivotal, brilliant moments in intense games. In this section, Rugbydirt.com chooses some stars who will go down in history as true rugby legends. |

| George Gregan |
George Gregan’s record speaks for itself. The legendary Australian scrum-half exited the international stage after the 2007 Rugby World Cup quarter-final loss to England as the most-capped player in the history of the game, with 139 Tests to his credit. He has also played in more World Cups than any other player and captained Australia more than anyone else, after he took over in 2001. |
| David Campese |
Australian David Campese is remembered as much for his terrific skills as a winger as his blunt words against arch rivals England. Arguable Australia’s greatest ever back, the somewhat eccentric Campese became one of the most recognizable players during his era. |
| Jonah Lomu |
Tall, muscular, bronzed and fiercely competitive, Jonah Lomu will go down in history as rugby’s biggest superstar. |
| Michael Jones |
Michael Jones has been described by many rugby critics as a complete player who dictated how the game should be played. A supremely gifted athlete who, when fully fit, would make the top of the All Blacks’ first-choice team list, The Times named him as one of the world’s greatest players of all time. |
